Advertising Works?

Until I started my business, I used to be very skeptical about advertising. Now I understand why advertising is a billion dollar industry. Even with well known companies, like Wal-Mart, the best way to reach out and keep your customers is through advertising.

It is worth noting that there have been a few great companies that do not advertise. I think Amazon is one of them but this may have changed. That said, I'm doing a search of successful (i.e. profitable) companies that do not advertise and if anyone knows of any, they can write it in the comments section.

Hmmmmm!

I don't think there is any such thing as a company thats in business that doesn't advertise. You would need to better understand what advertising is.. because every company does some sort of advertising - it just may not be your traditional view of advertising (tv,print, radio) or possibly new media.

For instance you rarely see Ad Agencies themselves advertising, or PR firms... but these companies always hold events and focus group sessions to talk about their case studies and how effective they amplified one of their clients campaigns. /thats still advertising / other companies focus on press releases, other companies spend time talking about other companies on print papers and congratulating them each year during Xmas, Easter and such stuff.

ALL Companies advertise - Even Lockhead Martin advertises and they are in the business of selling army equipment - Lawyers in the US advertise, Doctors, hospitals - expansive Yellow page inserts and bold text on yellow pages.. bla bla bla the list is endless

So to your question - No.. am sorry I doubt you'll get a decent/ (profitable) company that doesn't advertise in one way or the other. Besides how do you persuade someone to purchase or buy into your hype without talking about your product/service??

All big companies advertise; even Amazon does. But many times, businesses that have succeeded are those that have good ideas behind them; the greater and the more ingenuous the ideas, the greater and the more the business might succeed.

Read this: http://www.inc.com/articles/2009/06/alice.html

And of course, there has to be demand for the product(s) the business is selling; the more the demand, the more chance the business has of succeeding.

All companies, institutions, NGO, doctors, Nurses, churches, prostitutes, judges etc etc advertise. everybody ADVERTISES something.

You probably started Advertising your business even before you registered it.

Question to you. Before you registered your business, did you talk to someone about the great start up idea you had? if YES. Then you Advertised Your Business even before you started. you have a potential customer.

most people think advertising is only through tv, radio, or through hand out flyers. (traditional boring way)

When I buy a book at Amazon.com, they tell you that people who bought a particular book also liked XYZ book. They email me later with books that I may like. Not sure of any companies that do not advertise, but I'm sure all companies market themselves in varying ways.
